Lake Taupo: Es rumort in Neuseelands Super-Vulkan

Neuseeland: Die malerische Stille des Super-Vulkans Lake Taupo trügt

Schwärme von kleineren Erdbeben haben rund um Neuseelands Super-Vulkan Lake Taupo zu Beunruhigung in der Bevölkerung geführt. Das intensivste Beben mit Stärke 5 auf der Richterskala verursachte Erdrutsche und liess Waren von Supermarkt-Regalen fallen. Die Erdbebenserie seit September vergangenen Jahres sei jedoch kein Grund zur Panik, meinen Geo-Wissenschaftler der neuseeländischen Victoria- und Massey-Universitäten, die jetzt einen tieferen Blick auf den Unterwasser-Vulkan warfen. Mit einem Ausbruch sei bis auf weiteres nicht zu rechnen.

Neuseelands grösster See, Lake Taupo, entstand vor rund 25 000 Jahren bei einer der grössten Explosionen eines Vulkans in der Erdgeschichte. Mindestens 1100 Kubik-Kilometer Geröll, Asche und Bimsstein wurden in die Atmosphäre geschleudert und erreichten sogar die Antarktis. Flözartige, schwarze und oft meterhohe Ablagerungen des Ausbruchs können noch heute in den Sanddünen vieler Küstenbereiche Neuseelands bestaunt werden.

Ein zweiter Ausbruch des Super-Vulkans vor etwa 1800 Jahren zerstörte die Region Taupo nachhaltig. Die zurückbleibende Öffnung in der Erdkruste (Caldera) füllte sich mit Wasser und ist heute als grösster Binnensee Neuseelands ein beliebtes Ausflugs- und Freizeitziel. Lake Taupo ist nahezu 200 Meter tief und mit mehr als 600 Quadratkilometern flächenmässig weit grösser als der Bodensee.

Obwohl Neuseelands Super-Vulkan sich seit Jahrhunderten relativ ruhig verhalte, käme es doch rund alle zehn Jahre zu erhöhter seismischer Aktivität, so die Universitäts-Wissenschaftler. Die jüngste Erdbeben-Serie sei jedoch stärker als üblich gewesen, hiess es. “Ein Erdstoss der Stärke 5 ist für Neuseeland vergleichsweise gering, doch für die Region Taupo war es das stärkste Beben in Jahrzehnten”, so Dr. Finn Illsey-Kemp, Seismologe an der Victorioa-Universität in Neuseelands Hauptstadt Wellington.

Der Grund dafür sei bislang unbekannt und vermutlich sehr komplex, da der Unterwasser-Vulkan gleich mit mehreren Faultlines verbunden ist. Hohe vulkanische Aktivität wurde auch von einem Team internationaler Geo-Wissenschaftler festgestellt, das mit einem bemannten Mini-U-Boot des deutschen Forschungsschiffs “Sonne” bereits vor Jahren den Seeboden untersuchte. Seinerzeit wurden Risse und aktive Fumarole im Seegrund festgestellt.

Erst Ende vergangenen Jahres kam es zu einem heftigen Ausbruch des Meeres-Vulkans “White Island” rund 50 Kilometer vor der Küste Neuseelands, bei dem 21 Menschen, zumeist Touristen, ums Leben kamen und 26 Besucher der Vulkan-Insel schwer verletzt wurden. Eine der Faultlines unter Lake Taupo verläuft auch unter “White Island” und ist Teil des pazifischen, so genannten “Ring of Fire”, eine Ansammlung von aktiven Vulkanen rund um den Stillen Ozean. (06.
