TRAVEL FOUNDATION: “Where next” for tourism?

“Where next?” in international tourism asks the Travel Foundation – Image: Travel Foundation UK

A leading international sustainable tourism organisation has launched the bold new initiative ‘Where next?’ to spark a global conversation and action around the big systemic shifts that are urgently needed for tourism in the face of the climate crisis. The focus is on the stepping stones needed to drive adaptation and resilience in destinations, says the UK based Travel Foundation.

Big ideas to power tourism’s climate transition

With many destinations already experiencing severe climate impacts, there’s a growing urgency for tourism to move towards a more resilient and equitable model.  ‘Where next?’ is a new initiative that calls for the big shifts needed for climate adaptation that’s effective and just.

The Travel Foundation has joined up with international companies Finn Partners, Preferred Travel Group, The Travel Corporation and Cuidadores de Destinos to launch the campaign at London Climate Action Week, where it announced four big ideas, or ‘system enablers’, that aim to develop in consultation with destination authorities, communities, private sector partners and global institutions.

The ideas are:

  • An open-access, global climate risk register for destinations – to help governments, businesses, and investors act on the most urgent threats.
  • A global initiative to phase out harmful tourism models while supporting a just transition for workers into more positive forms of tourism.
  • A climate justice fund for tourism destinations – with funding priorities set by those experiencing the impacts.
  • Making community-led planning and destination equity-linked KPIs a requirement in tourism development.

The Travel Foundation is inviting everyone to contribute to the conversation and get involved.

In the words of the foundation\s CEO, Jeremy Sampson, “Transformation isn’t someone else’s job, it’s everyone’s. And it starts here.” (NAN/TF 03-06-25)
