NEW ZEALAND: Taieri Gorge Scenic Railway back on track

The Taieri Gorge Scenic Railway offers journeys through some of New Zealand’s most spectacular landscapes – Image: Dunedin Railways

The Taieri Gorge scenic train excursions in New Zealand’s south island are back in operation. After a hiatus during the pandemic years, Dunedin’s iconic Taieri Gorge railway is once again regularly welcoming passengers aboard its journey through some of New Zealand’s most spectacular landscapes.

“This journey represents an important piece of Dunedin’s tourism offering,” said Trish May, from the New Zealand Travel Collective, which is promoting the iconic experience.

The historic railway carries passengers from Dunedin’s magnificent railway station westward toward Middlemarch, traversing through the rugged Taieri Gorge. The train journey features spectacular scenery including deep ravines, towering rock faces, and picturesque valleys before turning around at the Pukerangi siding and returning to Dunedin. Throughout the journey, passengers are treated to informative live commentary from knowledgeable local guides who bring the region’s rich history and natural wonders to life.

“Working closely with the General Manager, we’ve developed comprehensive strategies to reintroduce this unique experience to both domestic and international markets,” added Trish May. “The initial response has been overwhelmingly positive, with strong interest from travel professionals across key international markets.  Many regularly booked the Taieri train trip before the pandemic and are delighted it is now up and running again.”

The trip provides an authentic New Zealand experience that appeals to travelers seeking unique, boutique rail journeys. (NAN/NZTC 03-04-25)
