New Zealand: Strategy sets a course for tourism industry’s next three decades

New Zealand’s Tourism Industry has released its new long-term plan Tourism 2050: A Blueprint for Impact. The strategy lays out the ambitions and gives direction to the future of tourism in New Zealand.

“New Zealand’s tourism industry is considering how global and local forces will push and pull the industry. We must prepare for the future by leaning in, and this means having a great plan,” said Tourism Industry Aotearoa (TIA) Chief Executive Rebecca Ingram to more than 300 business leaders at the Tourism Summit Aotearoa at Tākina Convention Centre in Te Whanganui a Tara Wellington.

Central to the blueprint is the Vision to Enrich Aotearoa New Zealand. It envisions a flourishing tourism ecosystem which supports thriving businesses, delivers world-class experiences and contributes to New Zealand’s communities and protects the environment.

The strategy contains 10 Actions which TIA believes can make game-changing advancements between now and 2030, and position the industry well for the next 30 years.

These actions fall into three broad domains:

  • To reset the tourism system’s design and management
  • To take action on carbon emissions and biodiversity
  • To better equip tourism businesses

The success of the Tourism 2050 Blueprint relies on a united approach, with industry, government, and businesses all committing to transformative actions, Ingram says.

“Each tourism business, regardless of size, has a role to play including embracing Te Whakarae Māori, living the principles of Tiaki, and championing sustainability to work towards a net carbon zero future. It’s this collective commitment that make a difference to all New Zealanders and will propel tourism forward.'”

The Blueprint was prepared with an industry leadership group, PWC, the TIA board and widely consulted on with TIA members.

Tourism’s biggest trade show comes to the capital of New Zealand

Tourism Industry Aotearoa (TIA) has announced TRENZ 2024 is coming to New Zealand’s capital Wellington for the first time. The country’s biggest tourism trade show will be held at Tākina Wellington Conference and Exhibition Centre on 8-10 May 2024.

“TRENZ was back with a bang in May and it’s safe to say the event is rapidly evolving and innovating,” says TIA Chief Executive Rebecca Ingram. “As a passionate Wellingtonian, I’m especially excited to be bringing TRENZ to the capital city for the very first time!”

Each year TRENZ brings hundreds of international travel Buyers, Sellers and media delegates together to meet with New Zealand’s leading tourism operators.

Wellington Mayor Tory Whanau said it is fantastic that Wellington will be hosting TRENZ for the first time.  “We can’t wait to welcome domestic and international visitors to Te Whanganui-a-Tara and for them to experience first-hand all that New Zealand’s capital city has to offer. Wellington is known for its vibrant culture and iconic events and we’re looking forward to sharing our city, Tākina and the manaakitanga of our people.”

Key facts about Tourism Industry Aotearoa (TIA):

  • TIA is New Zealand tourism’s peak industry body. The organization is the only independent association that represents all sectors of New Zealand’s large and diverse tourism industry.
  • TIA has about 1300 member businesses from across the industry, ranging from small owner/operators to large publicly listed tourism corporates and international hotel chains.
