Neuseeland offiziell coronavirusfrei

Neuseeland als Inselstaat im südlichen Pazifik ist jetzt offiziell frei von COVID-19. Dies hat die Regierung des Landes unter Premierministerin Jacinda Ardern am 8. Juni während einer Pressekonferenz bekanntgegeben. Gleichzeitig wurden alle noch bestehenden Beschränkungen des öffentlichen Lebens aufgehoben. Die strengen Einreisebestimmungen des Landes wegen der andauernden, weltweiten Coronavirus-Pandemie sind jedoch weiter in Kraft.

Der letzte Patient mit COVID-19 gilt als genesen und mehr als zwei Wochen lang am Stück gab es keine neuen Coronavirus-Fälle. Rund 1500 Menschen waren während der Pandemie in Neuseeland erkrankt, 22 Patienten starben.

Höhepunkt der strikten Beschränkungen war eine sechswöchige Quasi-Ausgangssperre für das Land von rund fünf Mio Menschen. Nur lebenswichtige Aktivitäten wie Einkaufen oder Arztbesuche waren möglich. Das öffentliche Leben sowie die Wirtschaft kamen zum Erliegen. Jetzt sind Arbeit, öffentliche Versammlungen, Schul- oder Restaurantbesuche, öffentlicher Nahverkehr und das Reisen innerhalb Neuseelands wieder uneingeschränkt möglich.

Premierministerin Ardern bewertete die rigiden Massnahmen Neuseelands über die vergangenen Monate als Erfolg. “Ich danke dem Team von 5 Mio für die gute Zusammenarbeit”, erklärte sie. Gleichzeitig mahnte Ardern aber, dass es “mit ziemlicher Sicherheit wieder COVID-19-Fälle in Neuseeland geben wird”. Neuseeland sei jetzt aber vorbereitet. (9. Juni 20)
