Neuseeland: Massenmörder zu lebenslanger Freiheitsstrafe ohne Bewährung verurteilt

Attentäter und Massenmörder Brenton Tarrant ist in Neuseeland vom Obersten Gerichtshof in Christchurch zu einer lebenslangen Haftstrafe ohne Bewährung verurteilt worden. Dies ist das erste Mal in der Geschichte Neuseelands, dass ein solches Urteil gesprochen wurde.  Tarrant hatte am 15. März 2019 zwei Moscheen in Christchurch mit halb-automatischen Waffen angegriffen und 51 Menschen getötet. 40 weitere wurden zum Teil schwer verletzt. Der 29jährige erklärte sich zu allen Anklagepunkten schuldig und Richter Cameron Mander folgte beim Strafmass den Forderungen der Staatsanwaltschaft. Der gebürtige Australier und verurteilte Massenmörder Tarrant muss demnach bis ans Lebensende ins Gefängnis.

“Seine Tat war unmenschlich”, so Richter Mander in seinem Urteilsspruch. “Er hat keinerlei Mitleid gezeigt. Er ist nicht nur ein Mörder, er ist ein Terrorist. Er hat versucht, essentiell den neuseeländischen (multikulturellen) ‘way of life” anzugreifen”.

Der Verurteilte nahm den Richterspruch der lebenslangen Haftstrafe reglos auf. Er hatte darauf verzichtet, sich noch selbst vor Gericht zu äußern. Dies räumte Befürchtungen aus, der Angeklagte könnte den Gerichtssaal als Plattform zur Verbreitung rechtsextremistischer Ansichten nutzen. Ein Pflichtanwalt verlas stattdessen eine kurze Erklärung.

Über die vergangenen Verhandlungstage hatten mehr als 80 Überlebende und Hinterbliebene vor Gericht Erklärungen abgegeben. In emotionalen Statements wandten sie sich oft direkt an den Täter. Viele hatten den Richter eindringlich gebeten, den Attentäter für immer einzusperren.
In einer ersten Reaktion zeigte sich Neuseelands Premierministerin Jacinda Ardern über das Urteil erleichtert. “Ein solches Verbrechen hatten wir in Neuseeland noch nicht erlebt, und auch das hohe, lebenslange Strafmass gab es bislang noch nicht. Ja, ich bin erleichtert, dass diese Person niemals wieder Freiheit geniessen kann.” Ob der Terrorist und australische Staatsbürger seine lebenslange Haft in Australien absitzen wird, ist bislang unklar.
