Neuseeland: Hundertwasser-Kunstzentrum wegen fehlender Touristen in der Finanzkrise

Neuseelands neues Hundertwasser-Kunstzentrum nimmt in Northland Gestalt an und soll im Dezember 2021 eröffnet werden. Ein Nebengebäude (Maor: TeKakano – Die Saat) ist bereits fertiggestellt

Weil Touristen wegen der Corona-Pandemie bis auf weiteres nicht in Neuseeland einreisen dürfen, zeichnet sich für ein neues Hundertwasser-Kunstzentrum im Norden des Landes eine Finanzkrise ab: Das weltweit letzte authentische Gebäude des verstorbenen Künstlers und Wahl-Neuseeländers Friedensreich Hundertwasser muss wegen des zu erwartenden internationalen Besucher-Einbruchs aus öffentlicher Hand mit rund NZ $ 300 000 p.a. subventioniert werden. Obwohl die Fertigstellung des NZ $ 33,2 Mio teuren und noch im Bau befindlichen Hundertwasser Art Centre (HAC) in Whangarei bis Dezember 2021 finanziell gesichert ist, werden die fehlenden Eintrittsgelder der ursprünglich erwarteten internationalen Besucher (42%) bei den jährlichen Betriebskosten negativ zu Buche schlagen. Noch vor der Covid-19-Pandemie waren rund NZ $ 970 000 Einnahmen pro Jahr durch den Ticketverkauf veranschlagt worden. 

Das HAC in Neuseeland wird das einzige Kunstzentrum ausserhalb Wiens sein, in dem original Hundertwasser-Werke gezeigt werden. Das HAC wird ausserdem eine zeitgenössische Maori-Kunstgalerie (Wairau Māori Art Gallery) beherbergen. Das begehbare Gebäude, bepflanzt mit Obstbäumen und seltenen Gehölzen soll den grössten, parkähnliche Dachgarten in der südlichen Hemisphäre tragen. Ein weiteres, inzwischen weltweit bekanntes Hundertwasser-Gebäude in Neuseeland, eine öffentliche Toilette im Weiler Kawakawa (Northland), wurde inzwischen nach umfangreichen Renovierungsarbeiten wiedereröffnet.

Hundertwasser hatte bis zu seinem Tod im Jahr 2000 in Northland gewirkt und die Toilette der kleinen Gemeinde Kawakawa zum Geschenk gemacht. Die Verwirklichung seines letzten Gebäude-Designs, das Kunstzentrum am Hafen in Whangarei, konnte der Künstler nicht mehr erleben. Die laufenden, jährlichen Kosten des HAC sollen nun künftig über öffentliche Finanzspritzen und vom einheimischen Fremdenverkehr gedeckt werden. Tourismus-Insider gehen inzwischen jedoch davon aus, dass Neuseeland seine internationalen Grenzen wegen der Covid-19-Pandemie nicht vor 2023 öffnen wird. (25. September 20)
