Neuseeland: Beliebter Wanderweg zu Cathedral Cove wieder offen

Der Zugang zu einem beliebten Strand auf der Coromandel-Halbinsel in Neuseeland ist rechtzeitig zum Sommer wieder geöffnet worden. Der Wanderweg zur Cathedral Cove war seit Februar 2023 geschlossen, nachdem schwere Unwetter, darunter der Zyklon Gabrielle, erhebliche Schäden verursacht hatten. Die Reparaturarbeiten dauerten fast zwei Jahre.

Der Strand, der für seinen natürlichen Felsbogen bekannt ist, war seitdem nur noch per Boot erreichbar. Naturschutzminister Tama Potaka erklärte, dass 1,4 Millionen Dollar aus der internationalen Besucherabgabe für die Wiederherstellung des Wegsteigs investiert wurden.

Potaka sagte, die Bucht sei wichtig für die Erneuerung der Tourismusindustrie in der Region „Die Cathedral Cove spielt eine wichtige Rolle für die lokale Wirtschaft, und die Wiedereröffnung ist ein wichtiger Schritt auch für die Wiederherstellung des Tourismus in der Region, nach den Stürmen und der Covid-19-Pandemie.

Man rechne damit, dass vor allem internationale Besucher jährlich schätzungsweise 12 Millionen Dollar in die Region bringen. Der Natursutzminister erklärte auch, dass das Gebiet zuvor schätzungsweise 250.000 Wanderer pro Jahr angezogen habe.

Die Reparaturen seien eine erste Lösung, um den Weg für den Sommer zu öffnen, sagte er weiter. Die Arbeiten zur Stärkung der Widerstandsfähigkeit gegen künftige Wetterextreme seien im Gange. Die zweite Phase der Arbeiten soll einen widerstandsfähigeren Zugang schaffen, der langfristig den ständigen Herausforderungen durch Unwetter und Erosion besser standhält. (NAN – 02-12-24)
