“Laufender” Baum des Jahres in Neuseeland gekürt

Ein “laufender” Baum wurde jetzt in Neuseeland zum Baum des Jahres 2024 gewählt. Wie der nationale Verband der Baumpfleger:innen mitteilte, habe der Rata-Baum (Metrosideros robusta) mit seinem Doppelstamm und der aussergewöhnlichen Gesamt-Erscheinung die Herzen der Neuseeländer erobert.

Der solitäre Baum am Friedhof von Karamea auf der Südinsel Neuseelands ähnele den personifizierten Ent-Bäumen aus den J. R. R. Tolkien-Fantasiebüchern “Herr der Ringe” oder der Hobbit-Trilogie, hiess es u.a. in der Wahl-Nominierung. Der Doppelstamm mit scheinbaren, hochhackigen Schuhen würde dem Rata die Erscheinung verleihen, als wäre er wörtlich in “vollem Gange unterwegs”, daher der englische Name “Walking Tree”.

Ein Rata ist mit der grösste blühende Baum Neuseelands. Er beginnt sein Leben als Epiphyt in der Krone eines Wirt-Baumes und wächst mit seinen Wurzeln langsam in Richtung Erde. Das genaue Alter des windgeformten, “laufenden Baumes”an der neuseeländischen Westküste is unbekannt. Rata in Aotearo/Neuseeland können aber bis zu 1000 Jahre alt werden. Der “Walking Tree” gilt aber bereits jetzt bei den Kiwis als Naturwunder. (NN 06-06-24)
