INTERNATIONAL: Progress towards sustainability across the global hospitality sector

Global progress for a more sustainable hospitality sector – Image: The Alliance

The London based World Sustainable Hospitality Alliance (The Alliance) and Saunders College of Business at Rochester Institute of Technology (Saunders) in the State of New York (USA) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU), creating a powerful new partnership to advance sustainability across the global hospitality sector.

The collaboration brings together the Alliance’s unmatched industry network, representing more than 66,000 hotels across 300 brands and 8 million rooms, with Saunders’ internationally recognized expertise in sustainability research and education. Together, they aim to prepare the next generation of hospitality leaders to drive meaningful change for people, planet, and prosperity.

As part of the agreement, the Alliance will share its resources, including the World Academy for Sustainable Hospitality, giving Saunders students opportunities to integrate industry-leading sustainability training into their studies and earn academic credits. Saunders students will also gain access to global initiatives such as the Sustainable Hospitality Challenge, while faculty and leaders will participate in the Alliance’s international summits. In turn, Saunders will embed the Alliance’s tools and expertise into its academic programs, recognize the Alliance as a strategic partner, and collaborate on joint research, funding opportunities, and sustainability measurement tools.

“This partnership demonstrates the power of academia and industry working hand-in-hand to scale sustainable practices,” said Glenn Mandziuk, Chief Executive Officer of the World Sustainable Hospitality Alliance. “By aligning the expertise of Saunders College with the Alliance’s network, we can accelerate impact for people, planet, and prosperity.”

Jacqueline Mozrall, Dean of Saunders College of Business, added: “We are proud to formalize this collaboration with the Alliance. It reflects our commitment to preparing future leaders with the advanced knowledge and tools to make the hospitality industry a driver of positive change.”

The World Sustainable Hospitality Alliance unites leading hospitality companies, brands, and strategic partners to address pressing environmental and social challenges. With a portfolio of over 66,000 hotels across 300 brands, totaling more than 8 million rooms, including industry giants like Hilton, Marriott, and IHG, the Alliance is committed to developing actionable programs and resources that foster a Net Positive hospitality sector. Through a network of over 100 partners, the Alliance is dedicated to driving collaborative action for a sustainable future.

Planet Conscious Amenities Pack Sets New Standard for Sustainability and Regeneration

In a bold and visionary move set to reshape the hospitality industry, the World Sustainable Hospitality Alliance in partnership with Beyond Bamboo Global, is proud to announce the launch of the Planet Conscious Amenities Pack. This groundbreaking initiative is not just a step toward sustainability, but a leap toward a carbon-positive, regenerative future for the global hospitality industry.

After more than a year of research and collaboration with Alliance members, the Planet Conscious Amenities Pack is here to challenge the status quo of the hospitality sector by integrating cutting-edge sustainability practices with real, measurable positive impact. This initiative is designed to help the hospitality industry not only reduce its carbon footprint but also actively contribute to the regeneration of natural ecosystems, setting a new benchmark for sustainable procurement in the hotel industry.

In alignment with the Pathway to Net Positive Hospitality framework, the Planet Conscious Amenities Pack is part of the Alliance’s flagship High Ambition Mover Projects. Its goal is to address one of the hospitality industry’s most pressing challenges: Scope 3 emissions. This innovative offering empowers hotels to mitigate environmental impact while achieving cost savings through coordinated procurement across the sector.

A Bold Step Toward Regenerative Hospitality

The new amenities pack stands out for its planet-conscious design, ensuring that every item is sustainably sourced, circular in nature, and transparent in its environmental credentials. Beyond simply minimizing harm, this pack takes a regenerative approach, ensuring that each product gives back more than it takes. It’s not just about reducing emissions, but also about restoring biodiversity, protecting ecosystems, and contributing to the greater good.

Each item in the pack is designed with accessibility in mind, featuring braille on packaging to ensure an inclusive guest experience. More than a procurement solution, this pack represents a shift toward a future where sustainability and guest experience are intertwined, and where every hotel stay contributes to a regenerative world.

Driving Impact through Collective Action

Glenn Mandziuk, CEO of the World Sustainable Hospitality Alliance, expressed his excitement, stating, “This project is a game-changer for the hospitality industry. By harnessing the collective purchasing power of our members, we are not just offering sustainable amenities but creating a platform for large-scale impact. Together, we are accelerating the hospitality sector’s journey toward a Net Positive future, where each hotel stay contributes to environmental stewardship and a more sustainable world.”

The impact of the Planet Conscious Amenities Pack goes far beyond sustainability in the supply chain. Through the Beyond Credits ESG Social Enterprise Fund, every item purchased through the pack supports a range of local and global projects aimed at creating real, lasting change. These initiatives include:

  • Reforestation Projects: Restoring biodiversity and offsetting carbon emissions.
  • Clean Water Access: Providing safe drinking water to underserved communities.
  • Plastic Waste Reduction: Cleaning up oceans and preventing further pollution.
  • Community-Led Sustainability: Supporting ethical trade practices and local businesses.

At the end of each year, participating hotels will receive a detailed impact report, highlighting the collective contributions made towards these projects.

Tiffany Kelly, Co-Founder and CEO of the B Corp-certified business, Beyond Bamboo Global, added, “This collaboration represents a revolution in the way we approach procurement. The Planet Conscious Amenities Pack is proof that sustainability can be a win-win for people, the planet, and the business. This is a true Net Positive model, where each item does more than reduce harm—it actively contributes to the regeneration of the planet.”

Unmatched Sustainability and Innovation

The Planet Conscious Amenities Pack offers exclusive access to best-in-class, sustainable products, with a rigorous vetting process ensuring that each product meets the highest standards of circularity, ethics, and transparency. The pack includes:

  • Global Accessibility: Discounted access to top-tier sustainable amenity solutions for Alliance members.
  • Rigorous Vetting & Verification: Independent third-party audits to ensure the highest sustainability standards.
  • Customization Options: Tailored packaging and branding to align with individual hotel needs and enhance the guest experience.
  • Social Impact: Direct support for initiatives like Empower for Employability, advancing local communities and social causes through the ESG credits scheme.

This collaboration is a bold step forward in demonstrating that the hospitality industry can be a force for good—delivering exceptional guest experiences while making a tangible positive impact on the environment and society.

A Call to Action

The Alliance is now inviting its members to join this revolutionary initiative and be part of a global movement driving sustainable change. By signing up for the Planet Conscious Amenities Pack, hotels can harness the power of collective procurement to significantly reduce their carbon footprint, lower costs, and actively contribute to a Net-Positive future.
