Electrifying Lessons for New Zealand: Powering Decarbonization Locally and Globally

New Zealand’s Electro Mobility Summit & Expo has been a success – Image: Brightstar NZ

The recent Electro Mobility Summit and Expo has been described as a success by the organizers, Brightstar New Zealand. Close to 400 people attended the 2024 Electro Mobility Summit and Expo in New Zealand’s largest city Auckland.

About 20 exhibits featured in the free-to-attend expo at the Auckland Showgrounds, including electric contracting equipment, electric trucks, the Nissan Ariya NZ spec display, EV charging stands, a Ford EV display, JAC Motors electric light truck display, and more.

The global race to combat climate change hinges on innovative solutions, and the recent Brightstar Electro Mobility Summit and Expo in New Zealand underscored the urgent challenges and boundless opportunities within the electric vehicle (EV) sector.

While the Chinese EV industry is experiencing rapid growth, leading to concerns about overcapacity and market saturation, it’s also driving advancements in battery technology and renewable energy generation. This dynamic landscape highlights the competitive nature of the global EV market and the critical need for international cooperation to accelerate the transition to a sustainable future.

While other nations grapple with electrification, China’s embrace of the “New Three” – solar, batteries, and EVs – offer valuable lessons for accelerating decarbonization efforts worldwide.

China’s “New Three”: A Transformative Trio

“Looking beyond the “New Three’s” economic power, or the industries they represent, we must focus on their transformative potential”, according to Brightstar’s Melanie Evans.  Affordable solar panels on rooftops and businesses, combined with low-cost EVs and advanced batteries seamlessly connected to the grid, are revolutionizing China’s energy landscape. This creates a virtuous cycle – solar power charges EVs, which then feed surplus power back to the grid.

Lessons for New Zealand and Beyond

New Zealand and other economies can leverage China’s experience, says Melanie Evans:

  • Supporting Domestic Manufacturing: Fostering local production of sustainable technologies creates jobs and reduces reliance on imports.
  • Investing in Battery Research: Advancing battery technology is going to be the greatest accelerator of change. China’s rapid development of new chemistries and solid-state batteries shows the potential for even greater breakthroughs.
  • Building Integrated Infrastructure:  Creating seamless connections between renewable energy sources, EV charging networks, and the electricity grid is key for a sustainable future.

Beyond the “New Three”: A Holistic Approach

The journey toward decarbonisation requires more than just technology, but new technologies can be a catalyst. China’s “New Three” demonstrates the transformative potential of electromobility and electrification. The road to electrifying our economies isn’t without bumps, and while we can’t ignore global geopolitical realities or the current background of trade tariffs, there are insights from China’s experience that we can benefit from. By learning from some of China’s successes and addressing potential challenges, countries like New Zealand can accelerate decarbonisation efforts and create a cleaner, more sustainable future for all.
