DENMARK: Celebrating World Bicycle Day with Danish Wheelness – Watch

Visit Denmark as the Danish marketing organization invites international travellers to experience Denmark’s unique cycling culture firsthand through Danish Wheelness™.

As the world marks UN World Bicycle Day on 3 June, Denmark’s capital Copenhagen prepares to host Copenhagen Sprint on 13–14 June,

Following the recent launch of Danish Wheelness, a new way to experience Denmark through cycling, well-being and everyday local life, VisitDenmark now encourages visitors to explore the concept in practice by discovering the country on two wheels.

Cycling is at the heart of Danish culture, with around 2.2 million daily bike trips across the country. More than just a practical mode of transport, it plays a key role in quality of life, health and social connection.

With over 16,000 kilometres of signposted routes across the country, Denmark offers accessible and diverse ways to explore at a slower pace – from city rides in Copenhagen to coastal routes, island-hopping and countryside escapes.

Denmark: Cycling is like a natural antidepressant

The UN established World Bicycle Day to highlight cycling as a sustainable and accessible way to travel – something Denmark has built into everyday life and visitor experiences across the country. Beyond transportation, cycling plays a significant role in supporting both physical and mental health and contributes to the high quality of life Denmark is known for.

“Cycling works like a natural antidepressant,” explains Danish Professor of Integrative Medicine Bente Klarlund Pedersen. “When you cycle, your muscles convert stress-related substances into a harmless form that cannot affect the brain.”

In Copenhagen alone, around 45% of residents commute by bike, reflecting how integrated cycling is in daily life.

Major events such as Copenhagen Sprint – expected to attract more than 250,000 spectators – further highlight Denmark’s strong cycling culture. The race brings elite riders to the capital while turning the city into a large-scale celebration of cycling, offering visitors a unique opportunity to experience the atmosphere of one of the world’s leading cycling cities.

“Denmark offers a wide range of cycling routes and events to explore. Copenhagen Sprint is a great example of how cycling brings people together – supported by strong infrastructure and a long-standing cycling culture,” says Line Nøhr Kobzili, CMO at VisitDenmark.
