Following a recent tragic kayaking incident and a series of water-related accidents involving tourists this year, Cook Islands Tourism has issued an industry-wide advisory highlighting the critical need for heightened water safety awareness among overseas visitors

Changing tides, strong currents, variable weather, and unfamiliar marine environments pose serious hazards to tourists who may be experiencing local lagoons and reef passages for the first time. In response, the tourism authority is urging all accommodation providers, tour operators, transport providers, and equipment hire businesses to actively share local knowledge and safety advice at every point of contact.

“Many visitors are experiencing our lagoons and reef environments for the very first time. What may seem like common local knowledge to us may not be obvious to someone visiting from overseas,” the advisory states. “A simple conversation, a reminder about local conditions, or encouraging the use of appropriate safety equipment can help visitors make informed decisions and contribute to a safe and memorable holiday.”

Cook Islands industry partners to emphasize safety guidelines

To reduce risks and protect international travelers, Cook Islands Tourism advises industry partners to emphasize the following safety guidelines to guests:

• Share Local Knowledge: Inform guests about current water and tide conditions before they engage in ocean or lagoon activities.

• Promote Safety Gear: Strongly recommend lifejackets for kayaking, stand-up paddleboarding, and other water sports.

• Advise Caution: Discourage swimming, snorkeling, or paddling alone, and advise tourists to inform someone of their plans.

• Encourage Guided Tours: Recommend guided experiences for visitors unfamiliar with local waters or dangerous reef passages.

• Monitor Conditions: Remind visitors to check weather and sea forecasts and observe all local warning signage.

Cook Islands Tourism extends its sincere condolences to the family and loved ones affected by the recent tragedy and remains committed to working alongside local operators to ensure the safe, responsible enjoyment of the islands’ marine environment.
