International travelers are increasingly seeking out authentic cultural immersion in Australia, with close to 1.25 million overseas trips including a First Nations experience in the year ending (YE) March 2026.

According to joint findings from Tourism Australia’s Future of Demand Report, Consumer Demand Project, and Tourism Research Australia (TRA), this represents a 6.7 per cent increase compared to the previous year.

First Nations Tourism Australia: Key Source Markets & Consumer Preferences

  • Top Markets by Volume:

    • United Kingdom: 173,000 trips

    • United States: 162,000 trips

    • China: 141,000 trips

First Nations culinary and food experiences emerged as the single highest demand category, attracting interest from 49 per cent of surveyed international visitors, followed by art demonstrations (40%), purchasing authentic arts and crafts (39%), and cultural guided hikes (37%).

Australia: Tourism 2035 Strategy and Reconciliation Focus

The surge coincides with the rollout of Tourism Australia’s 10-year Tourism 2035 strategy and its 6th Stretch Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP). Central to both initiatives is the commitment to elevate First Nations businesses through programs like Discover Aboriginal Experiences (DAE)—a collective that has expanded to support around 50 businesses and over 200 cultural tours.

By integrating First Nations narratives directly into global marketing campaigns, expanding distribution networks, and measuring cultural participation as a core success metric, peak bodies aim to keep Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander storytellers front and center on the global stage.
