The new Queensland government budget shows significant support for the tourism sector in Australia’s sunshine state. Just over $1 billion has been allocated for tourism over four years, including $446 million to support the new Destination 2045 strategy, with a focus on product development, aviation attraction, and bidding for global events.

The Destination 2045 strategy lists ecotourism as one of six priorities, says Ecotourism Australia. The organization based in Queensland’s capital Brisbane participated in several consultations with the Queensland Government prior to the strategy’s release, and is continuing to engage with the Government on how new ecotourism product is developed responsibly.

“The next 20 years present a once-in-a-generation opportunity to grow tourism in Queensland and showcase our state on the global stage” said the Queensland government in a press release.

“We’ll make Queensland a world leader in ecotourism, creating 45 new ecotourism experiences by 2045. We’ll connect our regions by road, rail, air and sea and attract events featuring the world’s biggest names in music, art, sport and culture.”

The record $1 billion tourism investment from the Queensland Government over four years, including $446 million in new funding, is kickstarting delivery of the Destination 2045 plan. According to the federal state government, The Destination 2045 plan will deliver benefits for Queenslanders, their communities, industry and visitors.

Celebrating 50 Years of the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park

The 50th anniversary of the official establishment of the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park was celebrated at the end of June 25. One of the world’s most iconic natural wonders situated off the Queensland coast, this anniversary marks an opportunity to reflect on tourism’s role in protecting the Reef, says Ecotourism Australia. The High Standard Tourism Operator program, which recognizes and rewards operators for their outstanding sustainability practices,  is one such world-leading initiative.

Ecotourism Australia is very proud to be one of only two certification programs accepted by the Reef Authority as being mandatory for an operator to receive the High Standard Tourism Operator designation. Through requiring operators to be certified, visitors to the Reef can be assured of a world-class, ecologically-sustainable experience that has been independently verified. (NAN 27-06-25)
